Sumba

I was born here, Sumba which I've always call as The Land Of Horses. Well, you can see beautiful horses in savanna, unguarded. After leaving Sumba for more than eleven years, now I lived here, working as a civil servant. My curiosity makes me wonder, do people know much about Sumba? then I started to browse it in the internet, here some information about Sumba from Lonely Planet. Before that, I would love to inform you that Sumba has 2 regent i.e East Sumba and West Sumba, but since 2007 West Sumba has been divided into 3 regent i.e. West Sumba, Central Sumba and West-South Sumba. So, since that moment, Sumba has 4 regent. This below information mostly talk about West Sumba and West-South Sumba, enjoy it ^^
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introducing Sumba
The dry, undulating island of Sumba has the richest tribal culture in Nusa Tenggara, centred on a religious tradition called Marapu. It’s one of the poorest but most fascinating islands to visit, with a decidedly off-the-beaten-track appeal courtesy of its thatched clan houses, colossal carved megalith tombs, outstanding hand-spun ikat and bloody sacrificial funerals.

Physically it looks quite different from the volcanic islands to the north, its country¬side characterised by low limestone hills and fields of maize and cassava. Sumba’s extensive grasslands made it one of Indonesia’s leading horse-breeding islands. Horses are still used as transport in more rugged regions; they are a symbol of wealth and status and have traditionally been used as part of the bride-price.
Sumba’s traditions remain particularly strong in its wetter, more fertile and more remote western half, which is home to about two-thirds of the island’s 540, 000 people. Though most islanders are now officially Protestant, marapu traditions and old conflicts are recalled every year at western Sumba’s terrific, often-violent Pasola festivals, which involve ritual battles between teams of mounted horse riders.
These battles hint at deep-rooted tribal tensions, which periodically erupt between rival princedoms. As recently as 1998 around 3000 tribesmen clashed in Waikabubak, a battle that claimed 26 lives according to official figures (though many locals put the true number at over 100).
While some Bahasa Indonesia is spoken everywhere, Sumba has six main languages. Few travellers make it here, but it’s a deeply rewarding place to explore and has fairly good transport connections with the rest of the region.

World’s best festivals: Pasola
Location: Sumba, Indonesia
Dates: During February and March; the timing is determined by the arrival of a type of sea worm called nyale
Level of Participation: 1 – this is a blood sport so sit back and let others do the hurting
A riotous tournament between two teams of spear-wielding, ikat-clad horsemen, the Pasola has to be one of Asia’s most extravagant, and bloodiest, harvest festivals. Taking the form of a ritual battle, it represents not so much a quarrel between opposing forces as a need for human blood to be spilt to keep the spirits happy and bring a good harvest. Despite the blunt spears used by combatants, and the efforts of Indonesian authorities to supervise events, few holds are barred. Blood is spilt and sometimes deaths occur.
Before the Pasola can begin, priests in full ceremonial dress must first wade into the ocean to examine the nyale worms at dawn; they’re usually found on the eighth or ninth day after a full moon. From the numbers and appearance of the nyale, a prediction is made as to how good the year’s harvest will be. Fighting then begins on the beach and continues inland.
Essentials: Pasola takes place in four areas: Kodi and Lamboya (February) and Wanokaka and Gaura (March). Call hotels in Waingapuor Waikabubak to find out the dates before travelling to Sumba, or contact a travel agent in Bali, Flores or Timor.
Local Attractions: Sumba has one of Indonesia’s richest tribal traditions, from its wonderful ikat to timeless traditional villages only now opening up to tourism.

Invictus

"The day I am afraid to do that is the day I am no longer fit to lead"

I just watching Invictus, it was from 2009 movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation about the events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted in that country following the dismantling of apartheid. I have downloaded it already several months ago but never really pay to attention to watch it until today. After all, I love the movie, it was great movie. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are really good in order to playing their role as Nelson Mandela and François Pienaar. This movie make me interest to know more about Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born 18 July 1918 served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. 27 years in prison? Can you imagine that? Wowww...I am speechless! Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation. In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly announced that Mandela's birthday, 18 July, is to be known as "Mandela Day" to mark his contribution to world freedom. What a story!

The title Invictus may be translated from the Latin as undefeated or unconquered, and is the title of a poem by English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul

Doing Good

“The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway”

Thank you ODB for encourage me again after what I've been through for several days ago so whatever happen do good anyway! Learn more and more to be like Jesus!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 1, 2011

Jesus of Nazareth . . . went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. —Acts 10:38

Someone once said, “The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.” I like that; it’s a great reminder. In the book of Acts, Luke summarized Jesus’ earthly ministry by saying that He “went about doing good” (10:38).

What does the Bible mean when it tells us to “do good”? Jesus did good by teaching, healing, feeding, and comforting people. Using Jesus as the perfect example, His followers are called to meet the needs of others, including those who hate them: “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you” (Matt. 5:44; see also Luke 6:27-35). They are to serve their enemies without expecting anything in return.

Moreover, as opportunity arises, His followers are to do good especially to fellow believers (Gal. 6:10). They are not to let persecution, selfishness, and busyness cause them to forget to do good and to share what they have with others (Heb. 13:16).

To be like our Savior and His early followers, we should ask ourselves each day: “What good thing can I do today in Jesus’ name?” When we do good, we will be offering a sacrifice that pleases God (Heb. 13:16) and that draws people to Him (Matt. 5:16).  — Marvin Williams

 Imitate Jesus—go about doing good.

This day, if my Dad still alive, we will celebrate his birthday. I just put a candle on his grave. Wish you were here...
Every day when I was a little girl even when I was growing up became a teenager and going to college, I would wait on steps when it was time for my Daddy to come home from work/business trip and run to meet him, no matter how tired he was or how rough day he'd had, he always scooped me up and made me feel like a princess. Happy Birthday, Dad! I love you Dad and I miss you every single day of my life :*
I always thank God to have you Dad and I would never ever change that, you're the best!

The Other Side Of The Door

Don't know why, always playing this song over and over again lately. Well, this is Taylor Swift :) I love her!

In the heat of the fight I walked away
Ignoring words that you were saying
Trying to make me stay
I said, 'This time I've had enough'
And you've called a hundred times
But I'm not picking up
Cause I'm so mad I might tell you that it's over
But if you look a little closer

I said, "Leave," but all I really want is you
To stand outside my window throwing pebbles
Screaming, 'I'm in love with you'
Wait there in the pouring rain, come back for more
And don't you leave cause I know
All I need is on the other side of the door

Me and my stupid pride are sitting here alone
Going through the photographs, staring at the phone
I keep going back over things we both said
And I remember the slamming door and all the things that I misread
So babe if you know everything, tell me why you couldn't see
When I left I wanted you to chase after me

Yeah, I said, "Leave," but all I really want is you
To stand outside my window throwing pebbles
Screaming, 'I'm in love with you'
Wait there in the pouring rain, come back for more
And don't you leave cause I know
All I need is on the other side of the door

And I'll scream out the window
I can't even look at you
I don't need you but I do, I do, I do
I say, "There's nothing you can say to make this right
I mean it, I mean it"
What I mean is

I said, "Leave," but baby all I want is you
To stand outside my window throwing pebbles
Screaming, 'I'm in love with you'
Wait there in the pouring rain, come back for more
And don't you leave cause I know
All I need is on the other side of the door

With your face and the beautiful eyes
And the conversation with the little white lies
And the faded picture of a beautiful night
You carry me from your car to the stairs
And I broke down crying, was she worth this mess?
After everything and that little black dress
After everything I must confess, I need you

Mean

My best friend just told me today that during my absence, some colleagues talk about me, I’ll call them as ‘They’. They were talking about some baseless gossip about me, bad thoughts and it surprise me since I never mean to them. I always help them with sincere heart, fix their computer problem, help them make report, etc and I never ask them to payback because I really glad to help people but they, with their words like knives, swords and weapons that their use against me, have knocked me off my feet, with their voice like nails on a chalk board calling me out when I'm winded, picking on the weaker man/women and with their switching sides, wildfire lies and their humiliation, they are trying to bring me down. Well, not only me, they were talking about others too. Why they got to be so mean and pathetic? I bet them got pushed around, somebody made them cold. That’s why I hate baseless office gossip. I am pretty smart enough huh? So all they can have is envy, jealous, etc. Ck ck ck if they wanna bring me down, go ahead and try, words can’t bring me down! But never mind with the mean people, all I wanna do is do my job as best as I can, I might do the best and let God do the rest.

Apologizing

I never thought that I would have problem with my colleague in office because we are close enough each other, I guess. I don’t even know what exactly the problem is. It’s all started two weeks when I get back from lunch and move his cigarette from my desk and placed it near to the window, because I hate cigarette and of course the smoke as well. When he ask to give it back to him, I was being busy with my mobile to reply an important message so I didn't really pay attention to what he ask for and he is getting mad. It was surprise me and the cold war begin…we didn't talk each other, we didn't say greetings, we are pretending that is nothing, we are doing our best to avoid each other, looks like simple complication and miscommunication lead to fall out and I don’t even care for that. It’s happen for a week and somehow I enjoyed it because I don’t have to get annoyance from him. Then I realize that it is not good having an avalanche wall between us so I decided to change it, talk! Swallowing my pride, I talk to him first last week because I believe that succumb to be the winner, first time is very hard and awkward but our friendship is getting better and better now, I guess :) . Jimmy Hasugian, my cell leader while in Bandung, wrote in his FB wall “Apologizing does not always mean that you are wrong and the other person is right. It just means that you value your relationship more than your ego” (June 20, 2011). I agree with that!

Kamus Universal Langenscheidt

Last week my friend, Vian was asked me, on Thursday, I guess. I was going to attending an opening ceremonial of Sumba Traditional Dance competition in Santo Alfonsius High School.

“Did you forget something in your desk yesterday?
I don’t think so.
Try to remember because if you can’t remember, I’ll hold that thing.
Hah? How come? Give it back to me if it is belong to me.
So you didn’t remember huh?
Nope.”

Then he put out a mini book, the yellow one, from his pocket which is a pocket dictionary, "Kamus Universal Langenscheidt" Indonesia-Jerman & Jerman-Indonesia. I recognize that book.

“Hey, that is belong to Mr. Michael, maybe he drop it when he was in our room while he was talking to Mr. Okta.
Really?
Yes, I am pretty sure it is belong to him, give it to me, I’ll give it back to him tomorrow.”

The day after tomorrow, I talk to Mr. Michael about that book and obviously he said that the book is for me. AHA! I really glad, Ich erwerben ein Pries von Herr Haase! Danke Schӧn Herr Haase! Gott segnen Sie!

Poor Vs Rich

Since I got an accident in the beginning of May on my way home, I still worry to ride a motorbike again, still remember how I felt down and sluggish to the street, even though my feet is still in pain so every time I go to office, I will waiting my friend to pick me up or I am using public transportation. While waiting my friend or transportation, I will stand in the front of my rent house and I can see what happening in the street. One thing that interesting me is I can see some kids go to school walking on foot, some of them wear sandal and some them without sandal/shoe because they don’t have sandal or shoe, and it incite me. A million thoughts raced in to my mind. In Jakarta and the other big city, we can see kids are going to school with their parents, or taking care by their driver and some of them using public transportation. We can see the kids are wearing an expensive and branded shoe, in school each of them have their own notebook, some of expensive equipments, and have much money to spend during the school break time. Ironic? Well, that is what happens; we can see a gap in their life.
It only an example, if you see the school in some districts, you’ll be shock, I dare it! The building is not being well taken care of. So imagine if a storm comes and destroy the school in a second. Now remember that our government (Indonesian legislative council) wants to build a new expensive fantastic office for them? Or some of them are travel abroad with study reasons? Is that true? Well, are they nuts? Are they losing their mind? I am speechless!!!

Do It, Anyway!

There’s a true story in my hometown, it just happen recently, about an old man, he is a farmer. Nowadays is a harvest time, farmers are about to collect rice from their field, the same goes with the old man. So he came down to his field, after crop his rice, he was going to put the rice into the sack, it should be about 50 sacks of rice then the big rain came causing flood and the flood take everything he had until nothing left, so all his harvest was gone. Can you imagine? After what he had done for couple months, he loses everything in one second. He was in deeply sorrow and confines himself in his room. When I heard this story, I was feeling sad too. I can only pray and hopes he can move on from his sorrow and never give up to do his job.

This story remind me a song called ‘Anyway’ sang by Martina McBride but I love the version of Kristy Lee Cook while she was performance in American Idol, it was the first time I heard the song and it’s touching me. “You can spend your whole life building something from nothing, One storm can come and blow it all away, Build it anyway. You can chase a dream that seems so out of reach and you know it might not ever come your way, Dream it anyway. God is great, but sometimes life ain't good and when I pray it doesn't always turn out like I think it should, but I do it anyway, I do it anyway. This world's gone crazy and it's hard to believe that tomorrow will be better than today, Believe it anyway. You can love someone with all your heart, for all the right reasons and in a moment they can choose to walk away, Love 'em anyway. You can pour your soul out singing a song you believe in that tomorrow they'll forget you ever sang, Sing it anyway. I sing, I dream, I love, Anyway”

Same way when I read about Kompetiblog 2011 in twitter, it is the third time I register to this competition, no matter win or not, I do it anyway, I just want to write, I write anyway ☺

Kompetiblog’s theme this year is "Belanda Masuk Dalam 10 Negara Terbaik Di Dunia Dalam Berbagai Macam Hal, Apa Pendapatmu?" hmmmm I was wondering, how Holland builds their education system until they get a good international reputation. For a small country like Holland, internationalization has always been important. Holland has been known as a trading nation for many centuries. Many large international companies such as Philips, Shell, Unilever, and Heineken originate from the Netherlands. It is common knowledge that internationalization is tremendous importance to science, technology and business. Increasing number of scientists and engineers are collaborating on a global scale whilst industry continues to thrive on the basis on international trade and alliances. So I believe that it not easy for Holland to become 10 countries of the world’s best in education, I am pretty sure that they build the education system with hard work that’s why many people from around the world interesting to get their degree in Holland, so do I. That’s why I finally decided to become a civil servant in my hometown, leaving all my comfort zone in Jakarta to chasing my dream which is to get the scholarship for my master degree in Holland, well it is my dream and I hope the dream come true. I will fight for it. Just DREAM and have a little FAITH!

How To Make Twitter Sidebar Transparent

I found Kristin Kreuk twitter sidebar is transparent and it is interesting in my opinion so I am curious how to make my twitter sidebar is transparent too then I found the tutorial, hope its helpful for you too. Please notice, having a transparent sidebar on twitter maybe a good or bad idea, its depends on you, because if your background color has similar to the text color, then making it transparent will make it look ugly and invisible, so please make sure your text has been set before and fit to your sidebar, well once again, it is a choice, up to you, you can be creative as you want, though :).
Here is the tutorial : you must login as your account in Twitter.com > Settings > Design then copy this JavaScript (  javascript:document.getElementById("user_profile_sidebar_fill_color").value = '';document.getElementById("title_theme").innerHTML = 'Click The Save Changes Button At Bottom To Finish!!';void(0);  ) to your Address Bar, replace this one http://twitter.com/settings/design with that JavaScript, hit Enter on your keyboard then click Save Changes button, it should be works! Well, it works with my twitter. Good luck to you! :)

Back To December

Yahuuiiiii It is my first posting in 2011 :) but I would love to Back To December 2010 :). Well, I always captivated by Taylor Swift, I love her songs, the way she wrote her songs...fascinated. She just release her official video "Back To December". I love the snow in this video, one day I'll be feel the real White Christmas tough, I promise :) just wait for me....
I'm so glad you made time to see me
How's life, tell me how's your family
I haven't seen them in a while
You've been good, busier then ever
We small talk, work and the weather
Your guard is up and I know why

'Cause the last time you saw me
Is still burned in the back of your mind
You gave me roses and I left them there to die

So this is me swallowing my pride,
Standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night
And I'd go back to december all the time
It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you
Wishing that I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I'd go back to december, turn around and make it alright and
I go back to december all the time

These days I haven't been sleeping
Staying up playing back myself leaving
When your birthday passed and I didn't call
And I think about summer, all the beautiful times
I watched you laughing from the passenger side,
Realized I loved you in the fall
And then the cold came, the dark days when fear crept into my mind
You gave me all your love and all I gave you was goodbye

So this is me swallowing my pride,
Standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night
And I'd go back to december all the time
It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you
Wishing that I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I'd go back to december, turn around and change my own mind and
I go back to december all the time

I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile, so good to me, so right
And how you held me in your arms that September night,
The first time you ever saw me cry
Maybe this is wishful thinking
Probably mindless dreaming
If we loved again I swear I'd love you right

I'd go back in time and change it but I can't
So if the chain is on your door, I understand

But this is me swallowing my pride,
Standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night
And I'd go back to december
It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you
Wishing that I'd realized what I had when you were mine and
I go back to december, turn around and make it alright and
I go back to december, turn around and change my own mind and
I go back to december all the time

Happy New Year 2011, by the way :)
A happy and prosperous New Year to you
